This preliminary study utilized 3 Tesla 1H MRS to study anterior cingulate cortex (ACC) and parietal-occipital cortex (POC) neurochemistry in healthy subjects residing in Utah (n = 19), Massachusetts (n = 10), and South Carolina (n = 10), to test the hypothesis that individuals residing at moderate altitude (Utah; 1,372 m) would show neurometabolite alterations vs. subjects living at sea level. Expressed as ratios to total N-acetyl aspartate (NAA), Utah participants showed lower ACC (p = 0.03) and POC (p less then 0.01) total creatine, a trend towards lower ACC glutamate (p = 0.06), and lower POC myo-inositol (p = 0.02). Study limitations include small sample sizes and uncorrected multiple comparisons. To our knowledge, this is the first MRS investigation to identify potential neurochemical differences in individuals residing at moderate altitudes vs. sea level, warranting future 1H MRS studies in larger cohorts and across a range of altitudes-of-residence.In this paper, a hierarchical attention network is proposed to generate robust utterance-level embeddings (H-vectors) for speaker identification and verification. Since different parts of an utterance may have different contributions to speaker identities, the use of hierarchical structure aims to learn speaker related information locally and globally. In the proposed approach, frame-level encoder and attention are applied on segments of an input utterance and generate individual segment vectors. Then, segment level attention is applied on the segment vectors to construct an utterance representation. To evaluate the quality of the learned utterance-level speaker embeddings on speaker identification and verification, the proposed approach is tested on several benchmark datasets, such as the NIST SRE2008 Part1, the Switchboard Cellular (Part1), the CallHome American English Speech ,the Voxceleb1 and Voxceleb2 datasets. In comparison with some strong baselines, the obtained results show that the use of H-vectors can achieve better identification and verification performances in various acoustic conditions.
To study whether the onset of narcolepsy type 1 (NT1) in children and adolescents affects BMI, specific metabolic risk factors, the onset of puberty, longitudinal growth or other endocrine functions.
A population-based study, comprising 34 patients, was performed with a clinical evaluation, an assessment of puberty and growth, actigraphy and blood samples at fasting, from patients and controls, to evaluate pituitary function, growth factors, thyroid gland, gonads, insulin sensitivity, appetite regulation and blood lipids.
In the post-H1N1 vaccination (PHV) narcolepsy group, the median BMI SDS was higher 6-12 months after the onset of narcolepsy (p<0.01), but it was no different 10 years after the onset of narcolepsy (p=0.91), compared with 12-24 months before the onset of narcolepsy. There was a correlation between an increase in BMI and a decrease in total energy expenditure (R=-0.74). In the nPHV group, weight and BMI changes were smaller and no significant changes were recorded. Early puberty was more common in patients with puberty onset after narcolepsy onset (n=16/19) compared with patients with puberty onset before narcolepsy onset (n=3/11, p=0.02). There was no significant change in height SDS during the studied period. Although they were within normal ranges, both median HDL and median TSH levels were significantly lower in NT1 patients, compared with controls.

While the evidence for this connection has been systematically reviewed in the adult literature, to our knowledge no studies have examined this relationship in young children. Recent scientific interest in understanding the effects of adverse environments in early childhood, including an emphasis on understanding the role of sleep, highlights the importance of synthesizing the current evidence on the relationship between sleep and the stress response system in early childhood. The aim of this systematic review is to examine the relationship between sleep health and biomarkers of physiologic stress (neuroendocrine, immune, metabolic, cardiovascular) in healthy children ages 0-12 y. Following PRISMA guidelines, we identified 68 empirical articles and critically reviewed and synthesized the results across studies. The majority of studies included school-age children and reported sleep dimensions of duration or efficiency. Overall, evidence of associations between sleep health and stress biomarkers was strongest for neuroendocrine variables, and limited or inconsistent for studies of immune, cardiovascular, and metabolic outcomes.
