Since maize is a monoecious plant, maize grain yield is dependent on the synchronous development of male and female inflorescences. When a drought episode occurs during flowering, however, an asynchronism occurs in the anthesis and silking interval (ASI) that results in significant yield losses. The underlying mechanism responsible for this asynchronism is still unclear. Here, we obtained a comprehensive development-drought transcriptome atlas of maize ears. Genes that function in cell expansion and growth were highly repressed by drought in 50 mm ears. Notably, an association study using a natural-variation population of maize revealed a significant relationship between the level of α-expansin4 (ZmEXPA4) expression and drought-induced increases in ASI. Furthermore, genetic manipulation of ZmEXPA4 expression using a drought-inducible promoter in developing maize ears reduced the ASI under drought conditions. These findings provide important insights into the molecular mechanism underlying the increase in ASI in maize ears subjected to drought and provides a promising strategy that can be used for trait improvement.There are no detailed descriptions of neuronal circuit active during frontal lobe motor seizures. Using activity reporter mice, local field potential recordings, tissue clearing, viral tracing, and super-resolution microscopy, we found neuronal activation after focal motor to bilateral tonic-clonic seizures in the striatum, globus pallidus externus, subthalamic nucleus, substantia nigra pars reticulata and neurons of the indirect pathway. Seizures preferentially activated dopamine D2 receptor-expressing neurons over D1 in the striatum, which have different projections. Furthermore, the D2 receptor agonist infused into the striatum exerted an anticonvulsant effect. Seizures activate structures via short and long latency loops, and anatomical connections of the seizure focus determine the seizure circuit. These studies, for the first time, show activation of neurons in the striatum, globus pallidus, subthalamic nucleus, and substantia nigra during frontal lobe motor seizures on the cellular level, revealing a complex neuronal activation circuit subject to modulation by the basal ganglia.

    Nepal has made significant strides in maternal and neonatal mortality over the last three decades. However, poor quality of care can threaten the gains, as maternal and newborn services are particularly sensitive to quality of care. Our study aimed to understand current gaps in the process and the outcome dimensions of the quality of antenatal care (ANC), particularly at the sub-national level. We assessed these dimensions of the quality of ANC in 17 primary, public hospitals across Nepal. We also assessed the variation in the ANC process across the patients’ socio-economic gradient.

    We used a convergent mixed methods approach, whereby we triangulated qualitative and quantitative data. In the quantitative component, we observed interactions between providers (17 hospitals from all 7 provinces) and 198 women seeking ANC and recorded the tasks the providers performed, using the Service Provision Assessments protocol available from the Demographic and Health Survey program. The main outcome variable was the ackgrounds equally. Our study also points to the need for additional research, both to document the quality of care more objectively and to establish key determinants of quality to inform policy.

    For network-assisted analysis, which has become a popular method of data mining, network construction is a crucial task. Network construction relies on the accurate quantification of direct associations among variables. The existence of multiscale associations among variables presents several quantification challenges, especially when quantifying nonlinear direct interactions.

    In this study, the multiscale part mutual information (MPMI), based on part mutual information (PMI) and nonlinear partial association (NPA), was developed for effectively quantifying nonlinear direct associations among variables in networks with multiscale associations. First, we defined the MPMI in theory and derived its five important properties. UMI-77 price Second, an experiment in a three-node network was carried out to numerically estimate its quantification ability under two cases of strong associations. Third, experiments of the MPMI and comparisons with the PMI, NPA and conditional mutual information were performed on simulated datasets and on datasets from DREAM challenge project. Finally, the MPMI was applied to real datasets of glioblastoma and lung adenocarcinoma to validate its effectiveness. Results showed that the MPMI is an effective alternative measure for quantifying nonlinear direct associations in networks, especially those with multiscale associations.

    Opioids are a mainstay of pain management. To limit the use of opioids, enhanced recovery after surgery (ERAS) protocols implement multimodal approaches to treat postoperative pain.

    This paper aims to be the first to assess the efficacy of an ERAS protocol inclusive of ultrasound-guided, surgeon-led regional blocks for outpatient plastic surgery patients.

    A retrospective review of patients undergoing outpatient plastic surgery on an ERAS protocol was performed. These patients were compared to a well-matched group not on an ERAS protocol (pre-ERAS). Endpoints included the amounts of opioid, anti-nausea, and antispasmodic medication prescribed. ERAS patients were given a postoperative questionnaire to assess both pain levels (0-10) and opioid consumption. ERAS patients anticipated to have higher levels of pain had ultrasound-guided anesthetic blocks.

    There were 157 patients in the pre-ERAS group and 202 patients in the ERAS group. Patients in the pre-ERAS group were prescribed more opioids (332.3 vs. 100.
