Poor treatment adherence among leprosy patients contribute to relapse, development of antimicrobial resistance, and the eventual plateauing of the prevalence and incidence of leprosy not just in the Philippines, but also worldwide. For this reason, we aimed to identify the patterns and determinants affecting treatment completion and default among multibacillary leprosy patients.
We conducted a retrospective cohort study involving three large hospitals in Metro Manila, Philippines. Patients who started the World Health Organization – Multiple Drug Therapy for multibacillary leprosy between January 1, 2007 and December 31, 2013 were included in the study. Selected socio-demographic and clinical data were abstracted from the patient treatment records. Survival analysis and proportional hazards regression were used to analyze the data.
Records of 1,034 patients with a total follow-up time of 12,287 person-months were included in the analysis. Most patients were male, younger than 45 years old, had an initia marked variations in how doctors in particular hospitals manage their patients, and these findings underscore the need to revisit and re-evaluate clinical practice guidelines to improve treatment outcomes and adherence.Temozolomide (TMZ)-based chemotherapy is a standard strategy for gliomas, although chemoresistance remains a major therapeutic challenge. The chemical mechanism by which TMZ induces cell death is DNA methylation, leading to double-stranded breaks (DSBs) and thus to apoptosis. However, TMZ-induced N6-meG sites are efficiently repaired and mediated by the DNA repair protein O 6-methylguanine-DNA methyl-transferase (MGMT), leading to TMZ resistance. KLF15, a member of the Kruppel-like factors family, mainly functions as transcription factor and potential suppressor gene by inhibiting proliferation, migration, and inducing apoptosis. However, the roles and regulatory mechanisms of KLF15 in glioma tumorigenesis and chemoresistance are poorly understood. In this study, KLF15 expression was upregulated in glioma tissues and cell lines upon TMZ treatment. Knockdown of KLF15 amplified TMZ-induced repression of cell proliferation, while KLF15 overexpression reversed this process. Mechanistically, KLF15 functioned as a transcriptional activator of MGMT. Moreover, KLF15 knockdown sensitized tumors to TMZ treatment in vivo. Taken together, these results suggested that KLF15 up-regulated MGMT through direct binding to the promoter of MGMT, which plays an important role in glioma resistance to TMZ, and which may be a potential target for cancer diagnosis and treatment.There are limited studies on the coinfection of coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) with nontuberculous mycobacteria. To evaluate the impact of a 10-week lockdown on children with asthma aged 4-17 years in terms of presentations to the emergency department (ED), frequency of admissions, compliance with medications and changes in pulmonary function testing results.
A questionnaire-based cross-sectional study using Google Forms to collect parents’ and caregivers’ responses after they consented to participation.
A total of 374 parents/caregivers were contacted and 297 (79%) responded. The majority of the children were male (188 or 63%) and 49.8% were aged 7-12 years. More than half of the participants (194 or 65%) reported improved compliance with medications and spacer use. There was a significant reduction in the number of presentations to the ED from 137 to 80 and admissions to hospital from 56 to 24 during the 10-week lockdown period compared with the same time period in the previous year (p≤0.0001). Around 25% of the participants used telemedicine by phone and social media applications for communication with their treating physician and 59 (80%) described it as easy and smooth.

This research evaluated (1) differences in body size and composition of Tasmanian infants at birth and 3 and 6 months postpartum compared with WHO child growth standards and (2) body composition changes in Tasmanian infants at the extremes of the weight-for-length (WFL) spectrum.

Growth characteristics at birth and growth trajectories from 0 to 6 months were compared against WHO child growth standards for 0-2 years.
Overall, growth of Tasmanian infants in the first 6 months of life was similar to the global prescriptive standards. Trajectories of fat mass (FM) and fat-free mass (FFM) accrual in infants from the extremes of the size spectrum appear to converge at the 6-month time point. Infants in the lower extremity demonstrated the most precipitous accrual in percentage FM (and the steepest decline in percentage FFM), compared with all other infants.
No significant deviations of growth were observed in Tasmanian infants from 0 to 6 months in comparison to the WHO prescriptive growth standards. Infants below the third percentile WFL showed the most precipitous increase in FM accretion. Periodic comparisons local infants with global standards will enable identification of significant deviations from optimal growth patterns.
