Skin breaks (SBs) for procedures and blood sampling are common in neonatal intensive care units (NICU), contributing to pain, infection risk and anaemia. We aimed to document their prevalence, identify areas for improvement and, through staff awareness, reduce their frequency.
Quality improvement project via prospective audit at a tertiary-level NICU in Australia was conducted. All infants admitted to the NICU for >24 h during two audit periods were included in the study. A specifically designed bedside audit tool was used to prospectively document all SB and blood tests performed on infants during a 4-week audit period (audit 1). Results were reviewed to identify areas for improvement, and disseminated to staff at unit meetings, shift handover and email. Following education and awareness, the audit was repeated (audit 2), and data were compared. Frequency of SB and blood tests performed was measured. Data were tested for normality and analysed using parametric or non-parametric tests where appropriate.
There were 52 NICU admissions during each audit period (104 total), with 34 (65%) and 31 (60%) having audit sheets completed, respectively. Median (interquartile range) gestational age and mean (standard deviation) birthweight were 29 (26.3-35) weeks and 1836 (1185) g for audit 1, 30 (28.5-31.5) weeks and 1523 (913) g for audit 2. The reduction in total blood tests (mean) was 36.3%, skin breaks per admitted baby day reduced by 60% and total blood volume sampled (mean) by 37.7%.

The importance of elective parotidectomy in early-stage squamous cell carcinoma (SCC) of the external auditory canal (EAC) is not well established.
A retrospective study of 43 patients with early-stage SCC of the EAC who underwent parotidectomy in conjunction with lateral temporal bone resection at three centers.
Overall occult parotid involvement (OPI) rate in early-stage SCC of the EAC was 13.9% (6/43). When considering both the anteroposterior position and the bony-cartilaginous position, patients with SCC in both the anterior wall and cartilaginous portion exhibited significantly higher OPI than other locations (37.5% vs. 0%, p = 0.001), with an increase in the OPI predictive value.
SCC located in either the anterior wall of the EAC or the cartilaginous portion of the EAC or both simultaneously showed a high prevalence of OPI, and elective parotidectomy should be considered in those patients.

We examined the relative contribution of trade-offs and increased condition to adaptive evolution in a recombinant inbred line population of Arabidopsis thaliana planted at the native sites of the parental ecotypes in Italy and Sweden in 2 years. We estimated genetic correlations among fitness components based on genotypic means and explored their causes with QTL mapping. The local ecotype produced more seeds per fruit than did the non-local ecotype, reflected in stronger adaptive differentiation than was previously shown based on survival and fruit number only. Genetic correlations between survival and overall fecundity, and between number of fruits and number of seeds per fruit, were positive, and there was little evidence of a trade-off between seed size and number. Quantitative trait loci for these traits tended to map to the same regions of the genome and showed positive pleiotropic effects. The results indicate that adaptive differentiation between the two focal populations largely reflects the evolution of increased ability to acquire resources in the local environment, rather than shifts in the relative allocation to different life-history traits. Differentiation both in phenology and in tolerance to cold is likely to contribute to the advantage of the local genotype at the two sites.
To evaluate the color stability of 3D-printed interim restorations with different surface treatments while immersed in various staining solutions or beverages (artificial saliva, tea, coffee, and wine) for 6 months.
An acrylic tooth was prepared for an all-ceramic full-coverage restoration. A laboratory scanner was used to digitize the prepared abutment tooth. A virtual all-ceramic full-coverage restoration was designed on the digitized abutment tooth using a laboratory CAD/CAM software. DASA-58 Eighty abutment teeth and interim restorations were 3D-printed with tooth-colored photopolymerizing resin. The restorations were randomly allocated into two different groups Polish and Optiglaze. For the Polish group, interim restorations were finished and polished with aluminum oxide finishers/polishers. For the Optiglaze group, one layer of nanofilled, light-polymerizing protective coating was then applied. The 80 printed interim crowns were divided into 4 different groups depending on where they would be immersed Artifthe interim restorations. When 3D-printed interim restorations are needed for extended intraoral service, nano-filled, light polymerizing protective coating can reduce the restoration discoloration caused by chromogenic beverages. The protective effect is most significant against coffee.
3D-printed interim restorations showed significant discoloration after 6-months immersions in the artificial saliva and common beverages (including tea, coffee, and wine). Among all the chromogenic beverages, red wine caused the most significant discoloration on the interim restorations. When 3D-printed interim restorations are needed for extended intraoral service, nano-filled, light polymerizing protective coating can reduce the restoration discoloration caused by chromogenic beverages. The protective effect is most significant against coffee.
