We assessed the 10-year efficacy, immunogenicity and safety of two doses of a combined measles-mumps-rubella-varicella vaccine (MMRV) or one dose of a monovalent varicella vaccine (V) in children from Czech Republic, Lithuania, Poland, Romania and Slovakia.
This was a phase IIIB follow-up of an observer-blind, randomized, controlled trial (NCT00226499). In phase A, healthy children aged 12-22months from 10 European countries were randomized in a 331 ratio to receive two doses of MMRV (MMRV group), one dose of MMR followed by one dose of V (MMR+V group), or two doses of MMR (MMR; control group), 42days apart. Vaccine efficacy (VE) against varicella (confirmed by viral DNA detection or epidemiological link and clinical assessment) was calculated with 95% confidence intervals using Cox proportional hazards regression model. Immunogenicity was assessed as seropositivity rates and geometric mean concentrations (GMCs). Solicited and unsolicited adverse events (AEs) and serious AEs (SAEs) were recorded.
A totaion than one dose against varicella and induced antibody responses that persisted 10 years post-vaccination.
Otitis media with effusion (OME) commonly occurs and persists in young children. It can cause hearing impairment and damage to the tympanic membrane without treatment. We aimed to determine the prevalence and association of Streptococcus pneumoniae in the nasopharynx of healthy children before the introduction of a pneumococcal conjugate vaccine.
In October 2016, nasopharyngeal swabs collection and otoscope examinations by an otolaryngologist were conducted in children aged less than 24months in Nha Trang, Vietnam. OME was diagnosed as the presence of middle ear fluid using a digital otoscope equipped with a pneumatic otoscope. Quantitative PCR targeting pneumococci-specific lytA (the major autolysis gene) and bacterial culture were performed to detect S. pneumoniae. The point prevalence of OME in the study area was estimated. The association between OME and S. pneumoniae in the nasopharynx was evaluated using a multivariable logistic regression model.
Among the 274 children who underwent bilateral ear oung children.Autologous fat grafting is commonly used in plastic and reconstructive surgery, but its indications are less well known in the hand surgery literature. Autologous fat grafting is frequently used for its anti-inflammatory, proangiogenic, and regenerative properties, which can be useful in treating the hand and upper extremity. We present a summary of the current literature on autologous fat grafting in the hand and upper extremity and discuss the applications, outcomes, techniques, safety, and level of evidence.
To evaluate the impact of the implementation of a best practice infection prevention and control bundle on healthcare associated burn wound infections in a paediatric burns unit.
Burn patients are vulnerable to infection. For this patient population, infection is associated with increased morbidity and mortality, thereby representing a significant challenge for burns clinicians who care for them.
An interrupted time series was used to compare healthcare associated burn wound infections in paediatric burn patients before and after implementation of an infection prevention and control bundle. Prospective surveillance of healthcare associated burn wound infections was conducted from 2012 to 2014. Other potential healthcare associated infection rates were also reviewed over the study period, including urinary tract infections, pneumonia, upper respiratory tract infections and sepsis. read more An infection prevention and control bundle developed in collaboration between the paediatric burn unit and infection control clinicians was implemented in 2013 in addition to previous standard practice.
During the study period a total of 626 patients were admitted to the paediatric burns unit. Healthcare associated burn wound infections reduced from 34 in 2012 to 0 in 2014 following the implementation of the infection prevention and control bundle. Pneumonia and sepsis also reduced to 0 in 2013 and 2014, however one upper respiratory tract infection occurred in 2013 and urinary tract infections persisted in 2013.
The implementation of an infection prevention and control bundle was effective in reducing healthcare associated burn wound infections, pneumonia and sepsis within our paediatric burns unit. Urinary tract infections remain a challenge for future improvement.

The worldwide coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) epidemic, caused by the SARS-CoV-2 coronavirus, is the defining global health crisis of our time. Spain has had one of the highest burdens of COVID-19 worldwide. During this period, Vall d’Hebron University Hospital Burn Center (Barcelona) has faced a unique challenge supporting the hospital response against COVID whilst continued offering an optimal care to the burn patient.
The aim of this study is to characterize the clinical and epidemiological characteristics of acute burn patients who received urgent health care or admission to the our Burn Center during the mandatory confinement period in Spain forced by the COVID-19 epidemic.
We analyzed the medical records of burn patients who received urgent care and/or admission to our Burn Center during the mandatory confinement period in Spain (Period 1 from March 14th to May 9th, 2020) and during the same period of the last year (Period 2 from March 14th to May 9th, 2019). Both groups were compared in orderrategies is a priority.
This study gives an overview of the clinical and epidemiologic profile of burned patients during the stringent lockdown in Spain forced by the COVID-19 epidemic. Our data shows a stable trend in the number of burn-related admissions and burn related-surgeries during the confinement period. A significant increase in the rate of burn children admitted and an increase in the severity of injuries in this population is noted. These data must be taken in account in the development of strategies to ensure the maintenance of Burn Centers function in extremely situations such as the current epidemic. A lack of effective burn prevention campaigns in our environment has been noted and the development of focused prevention strategies is a priority.
