Researchers who conduct observational studies typically assume that there are no unobservable differences between the treatment groups under comparison. Treatment effectiveness is estimated after adjusting for observed differences between comparison groups. However, estimates of treatment effectiveness may be biased because of misspecification of the statistical model. That is, if the method of treatment effect estimation imposes unduly strong functional form assumptions, treatment effect estimates may be inaccurate, leading to inappropriate recommendations about treatment decisions. We compare the performance of a wide variety of treatment effect estimation methods for the average treatment effect. We do so within the context of the REFLUX study from the United Kingdom. In REFLUX, participants were enrolled in either an randomized controlled trial (RCT) or an observational study arm. In the RCT, patients were randomly assigned to either surgery or medical management. In the patient preference arm, participants selected to either have surgery or medical management. We attempt to recover the treatment effect estimate from the RCT using the data from the patient preference arms of the study. We vary the method of treatment effect estimation and record which methods are successful and which are not. We apply more than 20 different methods, including standard regression models as well as advanced machine learning methods. We find that simple propensity score matching methods provide the least accurate estimates versus the RCT benchmark. We find variation in performance across the other methods, with some, but not all recovering the experimental benchmark. We conclude that future studies should use multiple methods of estimation to fully represent uncertainty according to the choice of estimation approach.Purpose Pretreating the kidney with 100 low-energy shock waves (SWs) with a time pause before delivering a clinical dose of SWs (Dornier HM-3, 2000 SWs, 24 kV, and 120 SWs/min) has been shown to significantly reduce the size of the hemorrhagic lesion produced in that treated kidney, compared to a protocol without pretreatment. It has been assumed that a similar reduction in injury will occur with lithotripters other than the HM-3, but experiments to confirm this assumption are lacking. In this study, we sought to verify that the lesion protection phenomenon also occurs in a lithotripter using an electromagnetic shock source and dry-head coupling. Materials and Methods Eleven female pigs were placed in a Dornier Compact S lithotripter where the left kidney of each animal was targeted for lithotripsy treatment. Some kidneys received 2500 SWs at power level (PL) = 5 (120 SWs/min) while some kidneys were pretreated with 100 SWs at PL = 1, with a 3-minute time pause, followed immediately by 2500 SWs at PL = 5 (120 SWs/min). Lesion size analysis was performed to assess the volume of hemorrhagic tissue injury created by each treatment regimen (% functional renal volume). Results Lesion size fell by 85% (p = 0.01) in the 100 SW pretreatment group compared to the injury produced by a regimen without pretreatment. Conclusions The results suggest that the treatment pause protection phenomenon occurs with a Dornier Compact S, a machine distinctly different from the Dornier HM-3. This result also suggests that this phenomenon may be observed generally in SW lithotripters.

    Type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) incidence is rising among Asian Americans, including Vietnamese, and is associated with increasing rates of urbanization, population aging, and overweight/obesity. We examined literature targeting diabetes self-management (DSM) beliefs, practices, and culturally informed interventions specific to Vietnamese adults.

    Using PRISMA systematic review guidelines, we searched CINAHL, Ovid, and Medline databases for research articles published from 2001 to 2019 examining DSM beliefs, practices, and/or interventions among Vietnamese adults with T2DM and/or family members.

    Of the 971 articles identified, 12 articles representing 11 studies (

    = 2,628) met inclusion criteria. Cultural knowledge and beliefs influence Vietnamese health practices and nutrition-based interventions that infuse traditional dietary norms are common. Two studies incorporated digital technology and community health workers in interventions.

    Appreciating unique health beliefs and practices of Vietnamese adults is critical to designing and testing culturally congruent interventions. Further research involving community-centered approaches to enhance DSM is warranted.

Further research involving community-centered approaches to enhance DSM is warranted.In the commune of Renca in Santiago, Chile, the household waste is currently collected on the kerbside and then thrown in the rear of a compactor truck. This system becomes inefficient when not all citizens are always serviced, yielding high overall collection costs and negative impacts on the environment and the society. Recently, recyclable waste collection sites have been situated throughout the commune, which need to be examined with respect to population coverage and average travel distances to these sites. This study employs mixed-integer linear programming models and geographic information systems to solve the bin location-allocation problem for household and recyclable waste separately. The results are shown for different values of waste generation, bin capacities, and travel distances, in addition to considering the users’ and municipality’s preferences in the decision-making process. The proposed recyclable waste bin locations present a more efficient solution than the existing collection sites in the commune of Renca since more users are serviced within a shorter travel distance to dispose of their recyclable waste.
