In this study, we examined the expression of NKG2DLs, PD-L1 and PD-L2 in lung cancer cells after treatment of TGF-β and a TGF-β inhibitor, Galunisertib (LY2157299).
TGF-β reduced the level of surface proteins of five NKG2DLs without altered transcription levels in lung cancer cells. Galunisertib reversed the effect of TGF-β on the expression of NKG2DLs. Since MMP inhibitors, MMPi III and MMP2 inhibitor I, restored the reduced expression of NKG2DLs after treatment of TGF-β, it was thought that TGF-β induced the expression of MMP2 which facilitated the shedding of the NKG2DLs in cancer cells. However, the expression of PD-L1, L2 were not changed by treatment with TGF-β or Galunisertib.
Therefore, inhibition of TGF-β might reverse the immunosuppressive status on immune cells and restore NK cell mediated anticancer immune responses by upregulation of NKG2DLs in cancer cells.

Particulate matter (PM), a major component of ambient air pollution, accounts for a substantial burden of diseases and fatality worldwide. Maternal exposure to PM during pregnancy is particularly harmful to children’s health since this is a phase of rapid human growth and development.
In this review, we synthesize the scientific evidence on adverse health outcomes in children following prenatal exposure to the smallest toxic components, fine (PM
) and ultrafine (PM
) PM. We highlight the established and emerging findings from epidemiologic studies and experimental models.
Maternal exposure to fine and ultrafine PM directly and indirectly yields numerous adverse birth outcomes and impacts on children’s respiratory systems, immune status, brain development, and cardiometabolic health. The biological mechanisms underlying adverse effects include direct placental translocation of ultrafine particles, placental and systemic maternal oxidative stress and inflammation elicited by both fine and ultrafine PM, dations are needed to mitigate maternal exposure and ultimately protect children’s health.
Pressure pain thresholds (PPTs) are commonly assessed to quantify mechanical sensitivity in various conditions, including migraine. Digital and analogue algometers are used, but the concurrent validity between these algometers is unknown. Therefore, we assessed the concurrent validity between a digital and analogue algometer to determine PPTs in healthy participants and people with migraine.
Twenty-six healthy participants and twenty-nine people with migraine participated in the study. PPTs were measured interictally and bilaterally at the cephalic region (temporal muscle, C1 paraspinal muscles, and trapezius muscle) and extra-cephalic region (extensor carpi radialis muscle and tibialis anterior muscle). PPTs were first determined with a digital algometer, followed by an analogue algometer. Intraclass correlation coefficients (ICC

Cigarette smoking is inversely associated with education, and despite this gradient effect, individuals with a General Educational Development (GED) diploma, obtained through a high school equivalency test, have the highest smoking prevalence. Considered the high school equivalency credential, it is unclear why individuals with a GED have a substantially higher smoking prevalence compared to high school graduates and dropouts. We conducted a qualitative study to understand life experiences, tobacco use patterns, and perceptions of tobacco among GED smokers and attitudes and behaviors around smoking cessation.
We recruited 40 GED smokers aged 18 to 35
years and conducted surveys and semi-structured individual interviews. Transcripts were independently coded, then coding differences were resolved and reviewed by a third team member. We independently determined themes within and between codes and met to determine final themes.
GED recipients had many early life experiences and characteristics that made them highly vulnerable to tobacco dependence.
